This twice-smoked spiral ham with maple bourbon glaze is a sweet and savory delight. Begin with smoked spiral ham, then smoked using maple wood to give it a great pairing of smoke flavor. This ham will go great with your Easter feast or a weekend meal where you need to feed a large group.
During the last 20 to 30 minutes, mop the maple bourbon glaze over the ham, allowing it to caramelize. We’re using a prepared glaze by HeyGrillHey. Their line of sauces and glazes is delicious and goes well with many dishes. I just had to try her Maple Bourbon Glaze on ham, and I’m glad I did.
Can You Cook a Smoked Spiral Ham with Glaze on a Pellet Grill?
Yes, you certainly can! You can cook a spiral ham in any smoker. In fact, the spiral ham you buy from your local grocery store is already cooked and perhaps smoked, so you’re simply reheating the meat by bringing it up to temperature and adding a glaze.
Smoking the ham gives your meat some great flavor that you won’t get when using your gas grill or oven. Combined with the right glaze, you’ll have a meal that looks as good as it tastes.
Maple Bourbon Glaze for the Ham
HeyGrillHey gives her recipe for this glaze here. I opted to purchase a bottle. If you want to try her premade sauces, click here to go to her site.
Here’s what you’ll find in this delicious glaze.
- Maple syrup. Not the fake kind. You must choose an all-nature maple syrup.
- Bourbon. Go with any bourbon you choose.
- Brown sugar. HeyGrillHey suggests using either light brown sugar or dark brown sugar. The dark brown sugar has more molasses, so it will result in a richer flavor.
- Hey Grill Hey Sweet Rub.
- Apple cider vinegar. This is a great way to complete the glaze since it adds a bit of acidity to cut through the sweetness.
How Long Does it Take to Smoke a Spiral Ham?
It will take about 3½ hours to smoke a spiral ham. Times will vary depending on the thickness of the ham.
You can’t use a clock to know when the ham is ready. Make sure you use a reliable meat thermometer to know precisely when the ham reaches an internal temp of 140 degrees F.
What If You Use a Non-Spiral Ham?
This recipe works well with a non-spiral ham. Make slices across the ham so the smoke and glaze can penetrate the surface if you use one. Also, non-sliced hams tend to take longer to cook. Plan on smoking for an additional 30-60 minutes.
